Jennifer Hudson for Elle US - November 2021 Women In Hollywood Issue!
About a quarter of the way through Respect, audiences see Jennifer Hudson as a young Aretha Franklin, covering Dinah Washington’s “This Bitter Earth” at the Village Vanguard. Seconds later, Mary J. Blige’s Washington, seated in the middle of the New York City jazz club, flips her table, yelling, “Bitch, don’t you ever sing the Queen’s songs when the Queen is in front of you!”
While vivid and memorable, the scene is not historically accurate. Rather, it appears to be a composite of two incidents—a similar outburst Washington had lobbed at Etta James and a critique about the messiness of Franklin’s dressing room. But it underscores, in a meta way, one of the greatest truths of the film: how damn near impossible, perhaps even blasphemous, it is to attempt to conjure the Queen of Soul, even for a prodigiously talented star like Hudson.
"It was my dream to play her. So then for her to say she wanted me to play her, it was a dream come true."
“I sit and think about it, like, What artist is built like that?” Hudson says, via Zoom, while trying to describe Franklin’s gift. “She was music. She was anointed, and her life was anointed.” But Franklin clearly saw something in Hudson, asking to meet with her following her Oscar-winning performance in Dreamgirls, and finalizing the decision while Hudson was in The Color Purple on Broadway. “It was my dream to play her,” says the actress, 40. “So then for her to say she wanted me to play her, it was a dream come true.”
The film, directed by Liesl Tommy, addresses the childhood traumas—including the untimely death of her mother—that helped inform Franklin’s singular voice, as well as the abuse she endured from her first husband and manager, Ted White (Marlon Wayans), and her eventual descent into alcoholism. But it is also book-ended by salvation through religion and song, beginning with Franklin singing alongside her father, Rev. C. L. Franklin, and ending with the recording of her seminal gospel album, Amazing Grace, at a Baptist church in Los Angeles.
Like Franklin, the Chicago-raised Hudson grew up in the church (her initial performance on American Idol was the first time her family heard her sing secular music). And her first onscreen appearance in Respect takes place during a rousing church service. “After the take was done, the congregation was still carrying on,” Hudson says with a laugh.“They were shouting in the spirit, and I’m still singing, and the camera people were like, ‘What is happening?’ But it was like, ‘We having church.’ ”
Also like Franklin, Hudson has experienced more than her fair share of trauma. In 2008, her mother, brother, and seven-year-old nephew were murdered. Hudson’s estranged brother-in-law is serving a life sentence for the crimes. Toward the end of Respect, Hudson’s Franklin has a vision of her late mother, stepping away from her piano to embrace her daughter and remove a drink from her hand. “That scene, in that moment, felt so real to me,” Hudson says. “One of my last moments with my family was in my home by the piano. And for me, when I’m trying to find my inner peace, I always go to the piano and play a song that was inspired by my mother.”
A challenge for Hudson, who describes herself as “very talkative and expressive,” was to convey Franklin’s subtlety. “Even when she was her most powerful and most fabulous, [Franklin] was very careful with her words,” Tommy says. “I was attracted to that side of her, why she was that way and how she changed from someone who was unsure and shy to someone who was clear about herself, who had agency, and who stepped into her own power. That was the journey I was interested in.”
The role marks a full-circle journey for Hudson as well. Her audition song for American Idol was Franklin’s “Share Your Love With Me,” after all. And this past August, Hudson wowed audiences at the We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert in Central Park with a breath-taking performance of “Nessun Dorma,” the aria Franklin famously sang at a moment’s notice at the 1998 Grammys, when Luciano Pavarotti fell ill. Hudson gave an encore performance of the piece the following weekend at Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda show in Venice.
Also over the summer, Hudson signed on to star in an anthology project called Tell It Like a Woman. Her segment, “Pepcy & Kim,” directed by Taraji P. Henson, centers on the true story of Kim Carter, a former addict who now helps other women take back control of their lives. While Hudson acknowledges that “music is the undertone” that helps her connect to emotion in her work, she’s also excited about the prospect of just acting. The next dream biopic role she’s currently manifesting: “I would love to play Oprah,” she says.
But for now, Hudson has reentered the awards-season conversation, with many touting her Respect showing as a worthy contender for the Best Actress Oscar. To costar Wayans, the accolades couldn’t be more deserved. “She did take after take after take, singing live. The woman never even asked for lemon and hot water or salt water to gargle with. She was a machine,” he says. “I’m just so happy that I got to watch that type of greatness. A queen played a queen. It’s a beautiful thing to see.”
Nice. Issue is on newsstands now.
#RHOA: Falynn Guobadia engaged to Jaylan Banks!
“Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum Falynn Guobadia is engaged to Jaylan Banks — the man her ex-husband, Simon Guobadia, accused her of cheating with.
“I said YES!!!” the reality star, 32, captioned a picture on Instagram Sunday of her hand — featuring her new engagement ring — holding her now-fiancé’s hand. “I have no clue how @itsjaylanbanks pulled this big surprise off but I have not stopped balling [sic] my eyes out. I love you baby❤️ #PerfectlyPina.”
The couple are also expecting a child together. They confirmed the pregnancy in a YouTube video in August after rumors circulated online.
“We are adding another little one to the crazy bunch,” Falynn, who has three sons from a previous marriage, said in the clip. “It is Jaylan’s first baby, so welcome aboard.
“I do realize that a lot of you and a lot of blogs have somewhat caught wind of our little news, and we just wanted to make sure that we made it past the two-month mark,” she added at the time.
Falynn’s pregnancy news was announced less than a month after she finalized her divorce from Simon.
In June, Simon, 57, called out Falynn in a scathing post on Instagram, writing, “Let’s start with why I filed for divorce. Let’s start with who she cheated with and currently pregnant for and living in a home I paid for – post divorce,” referencing the reality star’s romance with Banks.
That same month, another man, claiming to be one of Falynn’s former lovers, alleged to us that he had a relationship with the model leading up to her wedding to Simon.
“I didn’t know that Simon was in the picture until later on down the line when we already were dating,” London Gillespie claimed.
But despite Falynn’s alleged infidelity, Simon was the one who came under fire earlier this year for his engagement to his ex’s “RHOA” co-star Porsha Williams.
Simon and Williams, 40, got engaged in May after a month of dating.
“Yes we are crazy in love,” the Bravo star wrote on Instagram at the time. “I know it’s fast but we are living life each day to its fullest. I choose happiness every morning and every night.”
She affirmed that she had “nothing” to do with Simon and Falynn’s split, saying in response to the backlash, “Tuning out all negative energy and only focused on positive wishes. He makes me so happy and to me, that is what matters most.”

#HipHopNews: Lil Nas X And Jack Harlow Celebrate ‘Industry Baby’ Going No. 1!
Lil Nas X has done it again. The rapper lands his third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Industry Baby.” The Jack Harlow-assisted song rises from No. 2, becoming Nas’ third leader on the chart and Harlow’s first.
Taking to Twitter, Nas celebrated his latest chart achievement. “IT TOOK A FEW MONTHS BUT WE HERE! THANK U EVERYBODY! INDUSTRY BABY IS THE NUMBER 1 SONG IN THE WORLD! LESSSSSGOOOOOO!” he wrote.
Harlow also reflected on the milestone moment. “My first number one… I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see this coming while I was writing my verse,” he tweeted. “This song is something I’m gonna be proud to be a part of for the rest of my life. Thank you for having me @LilNasX.”
Kanye West, who co-produced and co-wrote the song with Take A Daytrip, also earns his fifth No. 1 single on the Hot 100.
Prior to “Industry Baby,” Nas’ debut single “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, topped the Hot 100 for a record 19 weeks in April-August 2019, while “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” was No. 1 for a week in April.
Additionally, Nas has surpassed Drake to become the rapper with the most monthly listeners on Spotify, second only to Doja Cat. His album Montero is also the most-streamed album globally on Spotify for the fourth week in a row.
Nicki Minaj Says Delay in Responding to Harassment Lawsuit Was ‘Innocent Mistake,’ Calls Out Accuser’s Attorney!
Namely, Minaj—as detailed in court documents dated Oct. 15 and viewed by Complex—is arguing that the failure to respond to the complaint in question in a timely fashion was “not willful.” According to the documents, attorney Judd Burstein was recommended to Minaj on Sept. 22. One day later, the two had a conversation via Zoom that ended with what Minaj described as her believing he had agreed to represent her.
As you’ll recall, Tyrone Blackburn—attorney for Petty’s accuser Jennifer Hough—said in court documents last week (notably surrounding stories focused on a potential $20 million default judgment) that the time for Minaj and Petty to formally respond to the complaint had expired. Minaj and Petty, Blackburn added, have allegedly targeted Hough and her family with a campaign of “bribery, intimidation, harassment, and stalking” as part of an effort to get her to walk back sexual assault claims against Petty.
On Oct. 12, at least according to Minaj, she learned that her manager “had not understood” that she had approved Burstein to be her lawyer and thus he had not been formally retained. That evening, Minaj claims, she and Burstein spoke on the phone and sorted out the technicalities regarding his services.
“My failure to respond to the complaint was the product of an innocent mistake, and I ask the court to excuse the delay so that I can defend what I believe to be an entirely frivolous case which plaintiff’s counsel has brought against me in an effort to use my name to generate publicity for himself,” Minaj is quoted as saying in the documents.
Elsewhere, Burstein describes Nicki as the “proverbial ‘deep pocket,’” and argues that his client should be able to pursue a motion to dismiss the complaint on multiple grounds.
Among the argued discrepancies are that Minaj has stated in a sworn declaration that a process server hasn’t been truthful, claiming that her husband was never served with a copy of the summons and complaint. The process server in question, Minaj claimed, is reported as having served such documents to a “Black male, 40 years old, 200 lbs.” with black hair and brown eyes.
“In fact, my husband is approximately 5’9’’ tall and weighs no more than 175 pounds,” Minaj is quoted as saying in the latest documents. “Further, there is no person who resides in our house or who was present there on September 15, 2021, who fits the description contained in the affidavit of service.” Burstein, among other things, is aiming for a motion to dismiss the amended complaint.
Billy Porter Calls Out Vogue After Featuring Harry Styles On Cover In Dress: ‘I Changed The Whole Game’!
The Emmy, Grammy and Tony-winning actor/singer says ‘I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it.’
Billy Porter has been slaying red carpets for years in provocative dresses and gowns, advancing the taboo conversation of forward-facing non-binary fashion in Hollywood. However, when Vogue Magazine decided to finally put a man in a dress on its front cover last year, they chose British musician Harry Styles.
Porter noticed, and for the first time, he’s speaking about it.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the Pose actor says he should be credited for changing perceptions.
“I changed the whole game,” Porter said. “I. Personally. Changed. The. Whole. Game. And that is not ego, that is just fact. I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it.”
Styles was featured on the December 2020 issue of Vogue wearing a Gucci dress, with the headline, ‘Harry Styles Makes His Own Rules.’ The “Watermelon Sugar” singer made headlines after wearing dresses at outings, something he discussed in the cover story.
“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away,” Styles said during his Vogue interview. “When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play.”
Porter, 52, also commented on the reasoning behind Styles’ new fashion sense. He stated that his decision to wear gowns was more of a social statement.
“He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do,” Porter said. “This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned down. All he has to do is be white and straight.”
In 2019, Porter talked to Vogue about his decision to wear a gown instead of a tuxedo to the Academy Awards that year. He explained the political and personal implications behind it and subsequent events in which he wore gowns.
“I grew up loving fashion, but there was a limit to the ways in which I could express myself. When you’re Black and you’re gay, one’s masculinity is in question. I dealt with a lot of homophobia in relation to my clothing choices.”
He continued, “My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part.”
Kanye West officially changes name to Ye!
Kanye West is no more. A Los Angeles judge signed off on the rapper's petition to change his name to Ye. The 44-year-old has no legal middle or last name. Monday's decision comes less than two months after the Yeezy designer filed paperwork saying he was making the switch for "personal reasons," but did not elaborate.

As for why he chose the name Ye, the "Runaway" singer has long held that nickname. It's even the title of his eighth studio album. During a 2018 interview promoting Ye, he said he connected to the biblical significance of the moniker.
"I believe 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible, it means 'you.' So I'm you, I'm us, it's us," he told radio host Big Boy.
The rapper actually declared three years ago he's the being formerly "known as Kanye West."
Ye may have legally dropped "West," but his estranged wife has not. Kim Kardashian West is still going by her married name, as evident during her recent hosting gig for Saturday Night Live. The couple's four children — North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm — all have West as a surname, too.

“Beast mode 💪🏾,” one fan commented on the post.
“This is EVERYTHING 👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥,” a second commented.

Instagram

The actor says he’s now in the best shape of his life.
That same month, Smith vowed to kick things into gear, get serious about his health, and shed the extra poundage.
“This is the body that carried me through an entire pandemic and countless days grazing thru the pantry,” the actor captioned an Instagram video at the time. “I love this body, but I wanna FEEL better. No more midnight muffins…this is it!”
The key to his success was staying consistent with his workout routine.

ESPN College Basketball Announcer Dick Vitale Announces Lymphoma Diagnosis!
ESPN college basketball announcer Dick Vitale revealed Monday that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma after being diagnosed and treated for melanoma this summer.
After several tests over the past few weeks, doctors confirmed the new form of cancer is unrelated to his previous experience with the disease. Vitale will be receiving chemotherapy and reports that the prognosis is good.
The ESPN veteran will be on the mic during the upcoming college basketball season and is under contract with ESPN through 2021-22.
In a statement via ESPN, he says, “I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that cancer can have on families, on children, and on all of our loved ones. It can bring you to your knees. It’s physically and emotionally exhausting. It robs you of so many things, including life itself for some of the most unfortunate patients. I never lose sight of that, and that’s why I feel so lucky.”
Vitale credits early detection and screening for helping him to manage his cancers. His previous surgeries helped remove the melanoma, which Vitale confirmed was “totally cleared.”
“I am lucky and blessed to have a great team of medical experts along with wonderful family support. I am also blessed to work with so many in my second family, ESPN. They have been so encouraging over the past three weeks as I’ve undergone one test after another in trying to analyze what was causing my symptoms.”
Jeremy O. Harris Tells Story of When Adele Attended His Play, Then Left Before It Started!
Tony Award-nominated playwright Jeremy O. Harris is opening up about the time when Adele showed up to see a performance of his play Daddy… and then left before the show began.
The 32-year-old playwright and screenwriter took to Twitter this weekend to share the story while he was listening to Adele‘s new song “Easy On Me.”
“STORYTIME: I need y’all to know as we continue to stream #EasyOnMe that the week of Adele and JLaw’s infamous gay clurb Hen weekend I got a call from my agent to tell me that Adele needed 6 tickets THAT NIGHT to see a performance of my play Daddy: a melodrama,” Jeremy began his 14-tweet thread.
The 2019 off-Broadway production of Daddy featured Alan Cumming and a swimming pool was part of the stage design, which was part of the reason why Adele decided to leave.
Adele was turned off by the smell of the swimming pool and said she wasn’t feeling well. When she found out the play’s run time was two hours and 45 minutes, she decided to leave before the play even began.
One of Jeremy‘s other high-profile plays is coming back to Broadway this fall.
#RIP😢💔🌺🙏‘Black Panther’ actress Dorothy Steel passes away at 95!
Dorothy Steel, the actress who played a tribal elder on Black Panther, has died at the age of 95.
According to WSB-TV, Steel passed away last Friday morning (Oct. 15) at her home in Detroit. “She went out strong,” her publicist told the outlet. Prior to her death, Steel was in the middle of filming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which started production this past June. The Marvel franchise reportedly flew her home so she could spend her final moments with her loved ones. As of this report, her cause of death has not been revealed to the public.
Steel’s role as the elder of the Merchant Tribe in the blockbuster movie was her feature film debut.
During a 2018 appearance on “Steve Harvey,” the actress said she was originally reluctant to appear in a ”comic strip at my age,” however, her grandson encouraged her to audition for the part. “He said, ‘Grandma, you always talk about stepping out onto nothing, letting your faith take you there. Now how come you don’t do it yourself?’” Steel recalled. “He said, ‘Either you’re gonna step out there or you’re gonna shut up.’”
She also stated that she sat down in front of her computer every day and “practiced” Nelson Mandela’s speeches to find the right tone for her character. An hour after sending in her audition tape, Steel heard from the Black Panther production team.
While reflecting on the experience, the actress said it made her “feel really good to be a part of something ... Black,” adding, “Wakanda forever.”
Steel has acted in several other movies, including Poms, Daisy Winters and Jumanji: The Next Level. She also appeared on a few television shows such as BET’s “The Oval” and Bounce TV’s “Saints & Sinners.”
We would like to send our condolences to Steel’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.
Wendy Williams Wasn’t Consulted About Fill-ins For Her Show While She’s Out – Insider Call it A DISASTER!’
*Can The Wendy Williams Show survive as the daytime talk show host continues to recover?
As previously reported, Wendy Williams has been dealing with an array of health issues over the past month. Earlier today (Monday, Oct. 18th), The Wendy Williams Show returned for its season 13 premiere. It was hosted by a guest panel consisting of Bevy Smith, Elizabeth Wagmeister, Michael Yo, and Devyn Simone. However, Wendy Williams was allegedly not consulted about these recent decisions. One insider claimed:
“No one asked Wendy for her approval before hiring Leah. They will say they are protecting Wendy and don’t want to bother her as she recovers, but it’s her name that is above the front door and she should have been consulted on this.”
Additionally, the insider also claimed that–while fill-ins for the next two weeks have been set–producers are scrambling to book other guest hosts:
“It is a disaster. CNN’s Don Lemon and several other hosts have already passed on joining the lineup. The last time Wendy was replaced with panels of D-list celebrities the ratings were a disaster. No one wants to see Bevy Smith or Michael Yo, they want to see Wendy. It is a thankless job, that has a very good chance of upsetting Wendy if you take it.”
Dababy Hilariously Crashes Dubai Boxing Match By Catapulting Himself Into The Ring!
DUBAI, UAE – DaBaby appeared to have the time of his life during a recent trip to Dubai. The Charlotte native was in promoter mode when he attended Dubai’s Social Knockout 2 boxing event at the city’s Coca Cola Arena on Friday (October 15).
Baby escorted headliner Rashid “Money Kicks” Belhasa to the ring while playing hype man and getting the crowd going. Belhasa ended up winning the main event fight against fellow social media influencer Ajmal Khan. The influencer fight industry is even booming stateside as well with the likes of Logan and Jake Paul leading the charge.
The “Suge” rapper reportedly performed at one point during the night alongside Giggs. Footage from the night saw DaBaby getting a ton of love from the crowd and the most viral clip had to be Baby flying into the ring and flipping over the top rope, but playing it off cool immediately after Belhasa’s victory.
Akademiks reposted the near-fail and fans clowned DaBaby in his comment section. “He thought he was rey mysterio,” one person wrote while another added, “This n-gga thought it was his turn to fight.”
While overseas, DaBaby is checking various activities off his bucket list on the trip. He tempted fate when he headed to a Dubai zoo to feed exotic domesticated animals such as lions, tigers and monkeys.
DaBaby is evidently brushing off the Rolling Loud controversy and still enjoying life while rolling with the punches. Fat Joe even recently hailed DaBaby as the modern-day 2Pac, which drew the ire of many on social media.
DaBaby wasn’t hesitant to accept the lofty comparison, replying to Joey Crack’s Instagram post with, “Agreed. but they gone salt that down too Crack.”
Naomi Osaka Is Currently Living Her Best Life In Greece!
The star giving us some great travel inspiration this week is tennis great Naomi Osaka. The four-time Grand Slam winner is taking advantage of the opportunity to have some adventure and also relax while enjoying the sights and sounds in Greece.
She shared some photos on Wednesday (October 14) of what she’s been able to do during her travels so far, including soaking up the sun on a boat on the island of Mykonos and enjoying photo ops in front of historic sites while wearing some super cute passion twists.
Her most stunning backdrop so far, for those who might be interested in following her footprints during their first or next trip to Greece, is the restored Temple of Isis (III). It can be found on the Greek island of Delos, which is near Mykonos. The archaeological site is the perfect spot, especially with the help of a clear blue sky, for some dreamy shots.
These moments to decompress surrounded by such beauty come at a time when Osaka is taking a break from tennis. After an earlier than expected exit from the U.S. Open in September, which she won twice in the past (2018, 2020), she shared in an emotional message that she needed to take some time away. The decision also followed the revelation that she had been battling bouts of depression since 2018 and wanted to prioritize her mental health (including by forgoing negative questions from reporters in post-match news conferences).
“I feel like for me recently, when I win I don’t feel happy, I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose I feel very sad. And I don’t think that’s normal,” she said last month. “I feel like I’m kind of at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match.”
She’s been focusing on other things since. That includes releasing a skincare line called KINLÒ, taping Sesame Street, hitting the road with boyfriend, rapper Cordae, and co-hosting the Met Gala. It seems she’s leaning into the things that make her happiest, including seeing the world, and we’re glad she’s taking the break she deserves and doing so in one of our favorite places!
Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Groping Trial Will Start February 1!
Cuba Gooding Jr.’s groping trial will start February 1, Manhattan Judge Curtis Farber decided Monday. Gooding faces six misdemeanor counts of alleged sexual misconduct involving three women. Farber set the date after expressing annoyance that proceedings in Gooding’s case would soon enter their third year. “I want to lock this down for trial,” Farber said. “This case has been on my calendar for two years.” In asking that the trial date be set firmly, prosecutors said they “have a lot of witnesses” and have to “fly people in.”
Gooding sported a dark-gray suit, a crisp white button-down, and an interpretive approach to aviator sunglasses. As Gooding entered the courthouse at 100 Centre Street, one person walking in for other court business wondered aloud, “Who’s that?” Learning that the man was Gooding, the onlooker said “I knew it!” with starstruck satisfaction. Someone else shouted “Gooding!” shortly before the actor passed through the door.
During an August 2020 court appearance, prosecutors revealed that 30 women had come forward with allegations against Gooding. He has maintained his innocence. Later that August, the Jerry Maguire actor was sued for rape by a Jane Doe in Manhattan federal court. The accuser alleged that Gooding forcibly performed vaginal and anal sex on her in 2013. One of Gooding’s lawyers, Mark Heller, denied the allegations, which he called “completely false and perjurious.” He added, “The incident never took place and did not give rise to any criminal complaint seven years back when it purportedly took place.”
FDA Expected to Allow ‘Mix and Match’ Approach to COVID-19 Booster Shots!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow a “mix and match” approach to COVID-19 booster shots. What does that mean? Fully vaccinated Americans will be able to choose which shot they want, even if it is different from what they initially received.
The New York Times reports that the news comes on the heels of a study presented to the FDA advisory panel last week by the National Institute of Health that suggested people that received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine might benefit from receiving a Pfizer or Moderna booster.
The study found that people who got the J&J vaccine saw a significant rise in antibody levels when receiving a Moderna booster compared to receiving another round of J&J.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA had previously advised against mixing vaccines from the three manufacturers. Previously, it was recommended that people stuck with the manufacturer they chose for their first dose.
The CDC is expected to review the data on Thursday and then issue a recommendation.
The FDA is expected to approve booster shots for everyone 18 and older who received the J&J vaccine. Pfizer boosters have been approved for those 65 and older or high risk, which is expected to be the guidelines for Moderna.
