Mindy Kaling for Variety - Power Of Women In Comedy Issue 2021!
Mindy Kaling is planting the seeds to grow her own comedy dynasty.
At the moment, her Kaling International is but a small company of women, as she describes it, with former Hulu development executive Jessica Kumai Scott as president plus a couple of assistants and three shows in production. But the actor-writer-producer has visions of expansion.
“There’s so many great production companies out there that have all these shows in the air,” she says. “So they need a head of production, and they have lots of executives. That’s my dream, to get a lot of people eventually.”
For now, the endeavor requires her to be hands-on, because “I do think that my voice is so specific, and the things I like are so specific. So right at the beginning, I want to make sure that there’s something really common to all of them.”
It is Kaling’s unique and utterly charming comedic voice that launched her from staff writer on “The Office” to a creative force and trailblazer for women in comedy. She’s built her brand and her online persona as her star has climbed, making more than 10 million social media followers wish she were their best friend.
While many of us have spent the past year baking sourdough and juggling Zoom calls, Kaling has been busier than ever. She is executive producing HBO Max’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever,” as well as co-writing the scripts for “Legally Blonde 3” and a Priyanka Chopra wedding comedy with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator Dan Goor.If that all sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. But this is Kaling’s speed: She doesn’t like vacationing, she has no hobbies and her daily schedule is intense.
“First I’ll wake up, drop my kid off at school, come back, work on one of two features,” she says. Kaling and Goor alternate days, penning “Legally Blonde 3” on Mondays, the wedding comedy on Tuesdays, and so on. “In the early afternoon, after Dan and I work on features, I turn over to looking at an episode that we’re about to shoot for ‘College Girls,’ giving notes on it, popping into the writers’ room on that. Then I’ll turn over to post and start editing on one of the two different shows.”
After that, it’s time for a studio notes call to talk outlines and casting, or to check in with the writers of the “Scooby-Doo” spinoff series she is exec producing and starring in. Before Kaling goes to bed, she reviews a cut or two of “College Girls” or “Never Have I Ever.”
“Sometimes if I’m up late anyway with my baby, I will spend two to three hours editing on my computer, just sending notes,” she says. (Because, yes, she also had a second child late last summer.) Saturdays, when she “only” works for five hours, are often spent at the Disney lot in Burbank to record voiceover for her character on the upcoming Pixar series “Monsters at Work.”
As she calibrates her workload, Kaling is also fine-tuning her philosophy on what it means to be a good leader and boss.
“I sign off on every writer on every single one of my shows, but I trust [Scott] to cull down the list of like, 200 writers to 20, which is something I never would have done three years ago. I would [have been] in there reading every single script. … I’m not able to do all of it anymore,” says Kaling. “A big part of my managerial style has been really emboldening and empowering the people who work for my company to make their own creative decisions.”
In between all that, she makes time a few days a week to, say, guest on a podcast hosted by two Indian American teenagers or speak to the film department at a women’s college.
“One of my big responsibilities is speaking to other people who have questions about how to get here, particularly young women and women of color,” says Kaling. “I think I’ve learned in the past six or seven years that this job is only as enjoyable as I’m able to impart wisdom on younger people. I don’t want to be that person that is keeping this knowledge to myself. And I’ve learned so much, I think, the hard way.”
#RHOA: Porsha Williams Engaged to RHOA Costar Falynn Guobadia's Estranged Husband After a Month of Dating!
Porsha Williams is engaged and her fiancé may be a familiar face to The Real Housewives of Atlanta viewers.
The Bravo reality star, 39, confirmed her relationship with Simon Guobadia — the ex of Williams' RHOA costar Falynn Guobadia — in an Instagram post on Monday.
"Our relationship began a month ago—yes we are crazy in love," she wrote alongside a selfie with Simon. "I know it's fast but we are living life each day to its fullest. I choose happiness every morning and every night. Tuning out all negative energy and only focused on positive wishes. He makes me so happy and to me, that is what matters most."
While she stopped short of announcing her engagement, Simon later confirmed the pair were indeed engaged after a month of dating.
"I asked her to marry me because we checked ALL of each other's boxes, and then some," the entrepreneur wrote on Instagram.
His estranged wife Falynn, 31, announced her split from Simon after two years of marriage last month. In an Instagram Story post shared on April 22, Falynn wrote that the "mutual decision was not made lightly" and she and Simon "are deeply thankful for the impact we have made in each other's lives, as well as the bonds formed with each other's children."
Addressing her new relationship, Porsha wrote on her Instagram post, "For all of you that need facts, I get the optics but Simon filed for divorce from a previous marriage in January."
"I had nothing to do with their divorce filing. That's between the two of them," she continued. "Falynn and I are not friends, and Simon's divorce has been settled. Our relationship is a positive, loving step forward in everybody's lives."
The divorce has not yet been finalized but the Guobadias have reached a settlement agreement.
Williams added that both her ex Dennis McKinley — with whom she split from shortly after giving birth to now 2-year-old daughter Pilar Jhena — and Simon "are committed to being respectful and supportive of my happiness in this situation, as well as being the best co-parents they can be to baby PJ."
"Two black men stepping up and being amazing people-let's praise them!!!!" she wrote.
Added Williams, "It's truly a beautiful moment in my life & we cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together. xoxo P #LoveWins."
Williams' post comes just a day after she was photographed wearing a massive sparkler on her wedding ring finger.
In photos shared on her Instagram in honor of Mother's Day, the actress can be seen wearing a large ring on her left hand as she poses with Simon and McKinley.
In his post announcing their engagement, Simon thanked friends and family for their support and shared a close-up image of the enormous emerald cut diamond engagement ring.
"Getting married again was never a question in my mind, but when," Simon wrote but added he did "not expect to be blessed with a mate so soon."
"The interesting thing about life is that it is an individual journey. Porsha and I, with the support of our loved ones have chosen to travel together as one and spread love and positivity to our community which is in desperate need of positive and healthy images of the best versions of ourselves."
"We travel this road not lightly considering we have being [sic] in relationships that have thought us to want and do better for ourselves. I asked her to marry me because we checked ALL of each other's boxes, and then some," he continued.
"We have done the individual work to sustain a healthy relationship, and I stand next to her, proud that we found each other. What we have is what we wish every single one of you out there - happiness. So when I asked...she said yes. That is ALL that mattered. Thank you again for your love and support. Truly appreciated 🙏🏾 #lovewins"
A rep for Williams did not immediately respond to request for comment.

NBC Has Cut Ties With Golden Globes, Plus Tom Cruise Returns Awards Amid HFPA Controversy!
Following concerns about diversity and lack of representation within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC has decided to cut ties with the HFPA’s Golden Globes and will not broadcast its 2022 ceremony.
While NBC believes the organization is committed to “meaningful reform,” it says a change of this magnitude “takes time and work” and the HFPA “needs time to do it right.”
This comes after the HFPA, which is made up of international journalists who put on and vote for winners of the Golden Globes, were called out for having no black members, in addition to failing to address sexism, among other ethical concerns. Several film and TV companies, including Netflix, Amazon and WarnerMedia, have also recently distanced themselves from the HFPA and the Globes as well.
NBC’s decision not to broadcast the ceremony comes the same day Tom Cruise reportedly returned his three Golden Globes to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association headquarters. This follows criticism of the group by other A-listers like Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson, who called on Hollywood to “step back” from HFPA.
HFPA has been a magnitude of controversy for decades. Earlier this year, the organization expelled former president Phil Berk, who, in a leaked email, shared a post to fellow members that called Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement.” It was also revealed in February that the organization had zero black members, out of a total of 87 members. As a result of that, HFPA claimed it aims to admit 20 new members in 2021, increasing membership by 50 percent.
Jackee Harry Reveals Why She Didn't Want Her 'Sister, Sister' Role!
Jackee Harry revealed that she did not initially want to play Tia Mowry's on-screen adoptive mother in the classic '90s sitcom Sister, Sister. Since the show ended, Harry has come to appreciate her role and what the show has meant to younger women though, Harry wrote in a Twitter thread on Mother's Day. Sister, Sister ran on ABC and The WB from 1994 to 1999 and starred real-life twins Tia and Tamera Mowry as identical twins separated at birth who reunite 14 years later.
Harry, 64, wrote that she felt she was "too young and sexy to be anybody's mother," so she did not want to play Tia's mother Lisa Landry. However, her sister convinced her to take the part "and I’m glad I did because it helped me realize how fulfilling it is to mentor younger women," Harry wrote. "Showing other people how to develop their skills & talents, helping them gain confidence, self-worth, self-awareness, love for others – it feeds my soul in a way that not even acting does," Harry continued. "Imagine my happiness when I see the wonderful women & mothers Tia & Tamera have become."
Lisa also "resonated with so many of you watching from home," Harry wrote, adding that she understands how important it was to "have a black mom like her on TV." She continued, "It goes to show that when somebody connects with you and allows you to teach them (in person or even through the television screen), what they’re really giving you is the opportunity to show them that they’re not alone."
Harry, who remains the only Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for 227, ended her threat with an important message to mothers. "To all the moms out there who are doing your best to raise your kids and hustling so hard to achieve your dreams, I see you. I love you. You’re the perfect example of how mothers can be sexy, strong, and successful," she wrote. "Happy Mother’s Day!"
In December, Harry returned to the soap opera world as Paulina Price on NBC's Days of Our Lives. She also has a role in the third and final season of FX's Pose, which airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET. Harry's other credits include The Paynes, The First Family, Girl Meets World and Everybody Hates Chris. Sister, Sister is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu.
HBO Is Developing a Scripted Drama Based on Author E. Lynn Harris’s Invisible Life!
According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO is reportedly developing a series based on late author E. Lynn Harris’s Invisible Life and its two follow-ups, Just As I Am and Abide With Me. Considered an LGBTQ classic, Harris’s 1991 novel follows the life of Raymond Tyler, a young Black attorney in New York discovering his sexuality, exploring the personal, familial, and professional facets of being LGBTQ in the early ’90s through his relationships with his friends and lovers, and during the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Prior to his death in 2009 at the age of 54, Harris was a prolific author, publishing 17 works and making the New York Times’ Best-Seller list ten consecutive times. In 2019, he was one of the first 50 people added to the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor at New York’s Stonewall National Monument. Games People Play’s Tracey Edmonds and Proteus Spann are set to executive-produce, while playwright Harrison David Rivers will write the script, as well as EP.
Fans Defend Phylicia Rashad After She Is Accused of Turning a Blind Eye to Bill Cosby’s Indiscretions!
‘The Cosby Show’ fans were ready to go to war on Mother’s Day when actress Phylicia Rashad became a trending topic on social media.
Rashad, who is revered as one of the greatest TV mothers of all time, was celebrated by fans paying homage to her “The Cosby Show” character Claire Huxtable. All was well at first as fans shared memorable Claire scenes from the show, as well as heartfelt tributes explaining how their own mothers were like the fictional mother of five.
But in the midst of celebrating, a Twitter user by the name of Lisa Talmage opted to throw a wrench in things. In a single tweet, she provoked a hive of Rashad fans to get into war formation.
“Claire Huxtable was an enabler of the longest and most prolific drug rape predator in US history, Bill Cosby. Everyone on set knew he was a sadistic predator. Everyone. 75 women drugged and raped by Cosby and he got away with it because of enablers,” wrote Talmage. The tweet, which has since been deleted, was flooded with strong reactions from those who took issue with Talmage’s comment.
“Stop trying to blame a BW [Black woman] for this rapist’s actions. Bill Cosby is responsible for his transgressions.”
“Just because you work with someone who turns out to be a rapist doesn’t mean you’re in any way responsible for that person’s actions.”
“I’ll flip this whole table over bout Mrs. Phylicia Rashad, go play with somebody else.”
As the #MeToo movement gained momentum, Cosby became the first celebrity to make headlines with his felony conviction of sexual assault. The once-beloved TV dad was accused of drugging and raping scores of women over the span of his career, however, his conviction stems from an incident that occurred in 2004.
In the beginning, Cosby’s longtime co-star Rashad defended the comedian.
“What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy,” she told Showbiz411. “And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture.”
Part of the fallout caused by Cosby’s tarnished reputation was the popular sitcom being pulled from syndication.
Maya Angelou and Dr. Sally Ride Will Be the First Women Honored on a Series of Quarters!
The United States Mint is launching a new series of quarters honoring 20 trailblazing women, beginning with Maya Angelou and Dr. Sally Ride.
The poet and the NASA astronaut will be the first two women to appear on the back of the coins, which will be released in January and will be in circulation until 2025 as part of the American Women Quarters Program.
In a statement, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee said, “for too long, many of the women who have contributed to our country’s history have gone unrecognized, especially women of color.”
She went on to say that Angelou and Ride “paved the way for many who came after them and inspired young women to carry on their legacy.”
In April, the U.S. Mint announced Ride and Angelou as the first honorees, stating that the coins’ heads “will continue to feature a likeness of George Washington designed in a manner to distinguish it from the current image.”
The group also encouraged those interested in nominating women to be featured on the quarters to do so through a web portal form created by the National Women’s History Museum.
Ride’s life partner and co-founder of Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego, Tam O’Shaughnessy, previously stated in an April statement that Ride was the first American woman in space and “would be so moved by this great honor.”
“It’s especially fitting that it comes during the 20th-anniversary celebration for Sally Ride Science,” O’Shaughnessy added. “This tribute reflects Sally’s legacy not only as a trailblazing astronaut but also as a champion of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields.”
Ride passed away in 2012 at the age of 61.
Angelou, who died in 2014 at the age of 86, was best known for her 1970 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Her longtime friend and Writer Jessica Mitford previously told PEOPLE, “Maya is one of those totally steadfast people with a spine made of iron,” she added, “She’s a force of nature with so many talents in every direction that the combination comes like an earthquake.”
Sens. Deb Fischer and Catherine Cortez Masto previously stated in a February opinion piece in USA Today that “as female U.S. senators, our story would not have been possible without these women who came before us.”
They said, “We look forward to being reminded of their legacies every time we see their faces on a new quarter.”
SAY WHAT? Jeffrey Epstein To Blame For Bill & Melinda Gates’ Divorce?
There is certainly a lot of speculation and theories about what really happened between Bill and Melinda Gates that led to their divorce. There are some claims that Bill was even vacationing with an ex of his.
One of the more disturbing theories though is that Bill’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein could have been one of the main factors that led to the divorce. Here is what we know about the interactions that the two men had over the years.
According to the Daily Beast, (the source is iffy, but hear us out), Bill and Melinda Gates held a meeting with Epstein in New York in 2013. By then Epstein had already been accused of soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.
The meeting went so bad that Melinda allegedly told Bill that she wanted nothing to do with this man. However, Bill and Epstein had had a relationship for years at that point. For Melinda, that meeting marked a breaking point. Of course, after everything that came out more doubt was planted in her mind about Bill’s relationship with him.
According to an article from the New York Times from 2019, it was in 2011 when the relationship between Gates and Epstein hit a high point. The reports indicate that Gates and Epstein were meeting to potentially set up a charitable fund, of all things, together.
During that year Bill Gates himself was said to have visited Epstein’s private Manhattan home at least 3 times. However the business deal fell through and Bill commented at the time,
“His lifestyle is very different and kind of intriguing although it would not work for me,”
Although the couple did not sign a prenup when they were first married it seems that the financial situation of the separation is going along smoothly. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Bill isn’t going to be giving up quite a bit of money when it’s all set and done.
Just yesterday it came out that Bill had essentially transferred ownership of 1.8 billion dollar’s worth of different stocks to Melinda. The couple is not expected to spend a long time in court debating over who gets what.
Bill and Melinda Gates were always considered very private people despite their public persona. That’s why going through a public divorce is most likely a very difficult time for them. Melinda came up with a great idea to help her avoid media scrutiny. Allegedly she has rented out an entire island for her and her kids.
The island resort in question is Calivigny Island. A nightly stay at the place will set you back about $132,000.
Netflix Shares First Official Trailer for Kevin Hart’s ‘Fatherhood’!

Inspired by a true story, the movie follows Hart as a single dad who brings up his baby girl after the unexpected death of his wife a day after their daughter’s birth.
Higher Ground Productions, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, produced the film, alongside Netflix and Sony.
The trailer arrives just five months after Netflix announced its exclusive partnership with Hart, which will see the 41-year-old actor to be the star of at least four films he’ll produce, with a first-look film producing deal also part of the pact.

J. Cole Joining Professional Basketball League In Africa!
Rapper J. Cole is gearing up to enter the world of professional basketball in Africa.
The Grammy-Award-winning rapper will play for the Rwanda Patriots of the Basketball Africa League, which showcases 12 teams. According to ESPN, the 36-year-old rapper arrived in Rwanda days ago and is quarantining, which is required to play in the league.
Cole has long showcased his love for basketball. While a student at Sanford High School in North Carolina, he was a standout star. After graduating, Cole became a walk-on for St. John’s men’s basketball team. However, once his rap career began to take off, he placed his hoop dreams on hold. Last year, reports swirled about Cole training to play in the NBA. Master P further fueled these rumors when he revealed to TMZ that he and the “Power Trip” star spoke in-depth about joining the league. When Cole asked P if he thought he had what it takes to go pro, the mogul replied, “It’s gonna be a lot of hate, it’s gonna be a lot of people not believing in you,” but he supported Cole’s dreams.
Sources say that J. Cole’s signing with the Rwanda Patriots will likely become official on Thursday. The first BAL game is scheduled for Sunday against the Nigeria River Hoopers.
The NBA and FIBA announced plans to establish the Basketball Africa League on February 16th, 2019. On October 15th, 2019, the inaugural season started, with teams from 32 African countries playing.

Sesame Street Documentary Explores The First Black Muppets!
A new Sesame Street documentary explores the story of the beloved children’s series and the first Black muppet on the show.
The doc titled “Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street” examines Matt Robinson, the Black actor, and activist who introduced longtime Sesame Street character, Gordon Robinson. The film will detail how Robinson wanted to use the show to promote Black culture, despite Muppets inventor Jim Henson and others creators wanting to take a color-blind approach to the characters. Robinson agreed with the show’s diversity factor. However, he was still determined to show Black children a character that they could identify with. Robinson went on to create and voice the series first Black Muppet Roosevelt Franklin in honor of the 32nd president of the United States.
Roosevelt was a part of the show’s first season as a student at Roosevelt Franklin Elementary School. The character stood out by leading conversations about African-American historical figures. However, this didn’t always resonate with Black parents in the way that Robinson wanted.
“They didn’t want this stereotype to be present for their kids to emulate. They wanted their kids to be on equal footing. You can see the argument on both sides of that really: it’s a very complex issue, and it’s one we’re still grappling with today,” said Street Gang director Marilyn Agrelo.
Adele's Estranged Father Dies At 57: Report!
Adele’s father, Mark Evans, has reportedly died. He was 57.
According to multiple reports, including The Sun and The Mirror, Evans died following a years-long battle with bowel cancer, with which he was diagnosed in 2013.
Despite reports indicating Evans was estranged from the “Chasing Pavements” superstar — having supposedly walked out of her and her mother Penny’s lives when she was just three years old — sources told outlets Adele “will still be heartbroken over the news despite their difficult relationship.”
“Mark’s family are of course very upset by his passing,” an insider told The Sun. “He always hoped things would work out with Adele, but it remained acrimonious to the end. He made a few attempts to make things right, but clearly, it had been too long.”
It’s been reported in the past that Evans struggled with alcoholism when he left Adele and her mother. (He has since pled for his daughter’s forgiveness.)
“I was a rotten father at a time when she really needed me,” he admitted in a 2011 interview. “I was putting away two litres of vodka and seven or eight pints of Stella every day."
Mirror noted, it wasn’t until Adele welcomed her first child, son Angelo, with her then-husband Simon Konecki that he realized he was “out of the picture.”
"I would have loved so much to have been able to hold her in my arms and tell her how happy I was for her," he confessed.
“I want more than anything to be part of her life again and to be a big part in my little grandson or granddaughter’s life. I’m having to face up to the fact that I may never get to know my grandchildren and it is breaking my heart.”
At the time of this writing, Adele has not commented on reports of her father’s passing.
Michael Che Speaks Out After Saturday Night Live Is Accused of Cultural Appropriation!
Michael Che is addressing the backlash surrounding one of his Saturday Night Live sketches.
The most recent episode of SNL, which aired on May 8, was already high on people's radar for booking Elon Musk as the host. The show's decision caused controversy, with several cast members speaking out about the Tesla CEO's debut on the long-running series.
Adding more fuel to the fire? Many social media users expressed their outrage with a sketch that aired on Saturday, featuring Elon, Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Melissa Villaseñor and Mikey Day.
The segment, titled "Gen Z Hospital," highlighted popular slang such as "bestie," "no cap," "go off, king," "sis" and other vernacular. However, many online found the sketch to be offensive and a form of cultural appropriation for using African American Vernacular English (AAVE).
"Love the relabelling of AAVE and a few assorted BLACK LGBTQ+ phrases as 'Gen z' speak," one Twitter user wrote. "Love to see the erasure in real time."
Another Twitter user shared, "i hate how aave has been reduced to gen z / stan twitter language because those who have any knowledge about anything watch this and just feel gross about this subtle mockery of black people."
"the appropriation of AAVE by white people is gross, the mislabeling of AAVE as a 'Gen Z phenomenon' is also gross," someone else weighed in, "but on top of that, the SNL skit reads like they just pulled a list of terms from UrbanDictionary and sprinkled them in, not caring that AAVE has a defined grammar!"
Others simply didn't find the skit funny, with one person adding, "SNL's gen z hospital sketch might just be the worst thing I have ever witnessed. unbearable levels of cringe."
Following the criticism of the sketch, Michael Che issued a statement on Monday, May 10. The comedian revealed he wrote the skit, noting he "was stunned" by the response.
"I've been reading about how my 'gen z' sketch was misappropriating AAVE," he shared on Instagram, later admitting that he didn't know what the term meant before. "I had to look it up. Turns out it's an acronym for 'African American Vernacular English.' You know, AAVE! That ol' saying that actual Black people use in conversation all the time..."
"Look the sketch bombed," he continued. "I'm used to that. I meant no offense to the 'AAVE' community. I love AAVE. AAVE to the moon."
The Weekend Update co-host captioned his post, "if i could stop one person from calling everybody bro and bestie, im happy with that."
At this time, Michael is the only SNL star to speak out. The cast members who participated in the skit, as well as Elon, haven't publicly commented on the criticism. SNL has yet to publicly address the backlash either.
14-Year-Old Florida Boy Aiden Fucci Has Been Charged With Murder Of 13-Year-Old Cheerleader!
An arrest has been made in connection with the death of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey, whose body was found in the woods on Sunday.
A 14-year-old Florida boy, Aiden Fucci, is in custody and facing a charge of second-degree murder, according to WVSN. St. John’s County Sheriff Robert Hardwick said it is still unknown if the boy will be charged as an adult at a press conference.
Bailey was last seen around 1:15 a.m. at a community center early Sunday. The girl’s family reported her missing at 10 a.m. that morning. The community came together to search for the missing girl for the better part of the day.
A resident who was out for a walk discovered her body in a wooded area. Hardwick said Bailey was fully clothed when she was found but did not provide any other details. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
According to the sheriff, the teens attended the same school and were a part of the same “close-knight” community.
Fucci’s next scheduled court appearance is set for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
